"Multi-mode User Input" is a fallacy. Only an old terminal user like me uses cursor keys on a PC, others use mouse all the time. Microsoft use mouse instead of touch on a tablet sometime but everybody else will use touch all the time.

Usage scenarios for a tablet are very different from usage scenarios of a notebook. A tablet is held in one hand and used by another. Also remember, people using their tablets while watching TV or taking tablets to bed with them.

ARM tablets will decide the future of Win 8. The lower the price the more successful Win 8 will be. Desktop is too difficult to use using touch so it is not an important factor, and people are not going to connect mouse and keyboard to a tablet.
