India's sales of electric two-wheelers grew from 100,736 units in 2020 to 233,917 units in 2021, accounting for only 1% of total sales of two-wheelers in India, according to SMEV data cited by India Times.
Thanks to the Indian government's EV subsidy program FAME II, which went into effect in 2019, sales of electric scooters surged since last June after the government bumped up subsidies from 20% to 40%. Therefore, the percentage of e-scooters with speed over 25km/h grew to 60%, while the percentage of e-bikes with speed slower than 25km/h declined significantly from over 70% to less than 40%.
India's EV industry has seen its highest growth ever in recent months. Over the past 15 years, the total sales of electric buses and two, three, and four-wheelers have been about one million units, excluding imported low-cost e-bikes from China. SMEV projected that sales in 2022 alone could reach the same level.
