The global top-5 notebook brands, not including Apple, saw their combined shipments decelerate in October and slip 20% month-on-month after their keen shipments in September for the peak season. However, volumes rose 3% year-on-year, according to the latest figures from DIGITIMES Research's monthly notebook update report.
Among the top-5 brands, Dell was the only vendor with an on-month shipment growth in October thanks to a recovery in the enterprise sector, a main source of orders for the US-based brand, the report's data shows.
Hewlett-Packard (HP), which pushed its shipments in September, eyeing to meet its fiscal 2023 targets early, saw a major on-month shipment plunge in October, while Lenovo had a shipment performance in between Dell and HP.
Asustek has been pushing keenly to promote consumer and gaming models since the beginning of the second quarter to digest its excess component inventory. With the end product inventory at the channel gradually building up, Asustek's shipments saw a massive deceleration in October.
Acer was cautious about its shipment planning for July and August, which led to a shortage at the channel for both months. Although Acer quickly responded by raising its shipments in September, it also created a high comparison base for its October shipments.
The top-3 ODMs together also experienced an around 20% on-month decline in October. With Quanta Computer losing more than 50% of its orders from HP from a month ago in October, Compal Electronics had overtaken Quanta as the largest notebook ODM in the month.
