Samsung Electronics is expected to incorporate in-house-developed ToF sensors into its own handsets in second-half 2021 at the earliest, as part of its efforts to sustain handset sales leadership in the 5G era despite its conservative shipment goal for the year, according to industry sources.
Samsung posted handset sales of 190 million units in the first three quarters of 2020, sharply down on year due to the pandemic, and the vendor has conservatively projected its 2021 sales at lower than 300 million units as pandemic impacts are not expected to ease until the second half of the year, the sources said.
Nevertheless, Samsung has readied new marketing deployments to strengthen sales of high-end handsets. The vendor is set to launch its flagship Galaxy S21 series later in January, ahead of original schedule, and will also release more midrange and budget-level 5G handset models with high price-performance ratios to rival Chinese counterparts.

Samsung will enhance film editing and camera module functions in its new handsets to support remote work, live casting and video streaming applications, and will also strengthen its 5G, AI and IoT ecosystems to enable its handsets to provide more customized mobile experiences for consumers.
Furthermore, the vendor will also expand its Samsung Care+ mobile device insurance services to more regions beyond the US and the UK to boost brand adherence by consumers.
