Taiwan Cement on October 25 held a groundbreaking ceremony for a nickel ternary battery factory located in Kaohsiung City, southern Taiwan, with the factory to be constructed and operated by its subsidiary maker of batteries Molie Quantum Energy, according to the city government.
With an estimated investment of NT$12.0 billion (US$429 million) and to be completed in May 2023, the factory will have an annual production capacity of 1.4GWh of nickel ternary batteries featuring high energy density and high power-charging efficiency, equivalent to supply for 24,000 electric vehicles (EVs) a year. In addition to powering EVs, high-end energy storage systems will be the other application of such batteries.
Due to the characteristics of production, cement makers are impossible to reach net-zero carbon emission and therefore Taiwan Cement has actively been engaged in green energy, energy storage, batteries, carbon sequestration, carbon sink via afforestation to offset its carbon emissions, company chairman and CEO Nelson Chang said.
For energy storage, in particular, Taiwan Cement will invest NT$5.5 billion to set up an energy storage system with an installed capacity of 250MWh at its cement factory in eastern Taiwan and one with 87.5MWh at another factory in northeastern Taiwan, Chang noted.
