Samsung Electronics is set to launch its flagship smartphone Galaxy S24 series in 2024, and has reportedly confirmed the simultaneous adoption of its in-house new-generation application processor (AP) Exynos 2400 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processors.
According to industry sources cited by the Korean media Theelec, Samsung's Mobile Experience (MX) Division has roughly finalized the AP configuration for the Galaxy S24 series. The Galaxy S24 and S24+ will both feature the Exynos 2400 and the Galaxy-exclusive Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with both APs manufactured by Samsung's internal foundry. It is said that Samsung will launch products with Exynos 2400 in its main markets - South Korea and Europe.
However, the highest-end model, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, will exclusively feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This is not only an insurance measure for Samsung's MX Division, but also takes into account the relationship with Qualcomm. Responding to the news, Samsung has indicated that it is difficult to confirm information about products that have not yet been released.
The Exynos 2400 is a new-generation AP recently announced by Samsung at its System LSI Tech Day 2023. Compared to the previous Exynos 2200, it offers 1.7 times higher CPU performance, a 14.7 times increase in AI performance, and features like ray tracing.
Previously, the Galaxy S22 series, released in 2022, used Samsung's in-house Exynos 2200. However, it received criticism due to issues such as heating and yield, and the subsequent Galaxy S23 series exclusively used Qualcomm chips.
This time, Samsung's MX Division has chosen to reintroduce Exynos chips. This decision is partly to enhance price competitiveness and negotiate with Qualcomm on pricing, as well as to give the System LSI Division's AP business a chance to catch up with Qualcomm and MediaTek.
Before the release of the Galaxy S24, Samsung will lead with the Galaxy S23 FE, paving the way for Exynos to return to the high-end smartphone market. It is reported that the Galaxy S23 FE will feature a 4nm AP, and although the specific product name has not been disclosed, it is rumored to be based on the Exynos 2200 with improvements. In some countries, it will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
