Tata, committed to setting up a wafer fab and an ATMP facility in India, announced a plan to attract experienced Taiwanese talents to help the new entrant in the semiconductor business speed up its ambition.
Money Control reported that Tata Electronics will hold a roadshow on April 13 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, to attract semiconductor professionals to India for its upcoming chipmaking facilities. Tata prefers talents with 5-16 years of experience in the chipmaking area, with roles including equipment engineers, yield engineers, and automation engineers, in addition to those who can perform electrical and mechanical troubleshooting. Professionals will receive 18 months of training in Taiwan before going to India.
In February 2024, India approved three semiconductor manufacturing projects, including one wafer fab and two ATMP facilities. Tata Group will build a wafer fab in Gujarat and an ATMP facility in Assam.
India-based CG Power and Industrial Solutions, in partnership with Renesas and Stars Microelectronics, will build another ATMP facility in Gujarat. Tata's wafer fab, which will be built by PSMC, costs INR910 billion (US$28 billion) and may commence operation by 2026.
The Economic Times reported that in 2024, India is projected to require 40,000-50,000 skilled workers in the semiconductor sector, marking a significant increase of 25-30% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the country anticipates a substantial surge in job openings over the next five years, with estimates ranging from 800,000 to one million positions to be created in this industry.
Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research, told Money Control that attracting Taiwanese to India will require various incentives and an infrastructure that guarantees a seamless transition for any professional eager to contribute to the growth of India's semiconductor sector.
