Japan's integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) primarily concentrate their semiconductor production facilities in the Kyushu and Tohoku regions. In response to the US-led "Chip 4" semiconductor alliance to counter China, the Japanese government has offered subsidies to attract domestic and international companies to invest in advanced manufacturing processes in Kyushu and Hokkaido, near Tohoku.
This strategy will foster a clustering effect within Japan's semiconductor industry. Due to geopolitical risks, such as the US-China trade war, Japanese IDMs have prioritized expanding their IC OSAT capacities in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries over other Asian regions, according to DIGITIMES Research.
Japanese IDMs primarily supply power semiconductor components alongside products like Renesas Electronics' microcontroller units (MCUs) and Sony's CMOS image sensors (CIS), widely used in automotive applications.
