Worldwide semiconductor sales came to US$40.7 billion in May 2023, up 1.7% sequentially but down 21.1% on year, according to data disclosed by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

"Despite continuing market sluggishness compared to 2022, month-to-month global semiconductor sales inched upward in May for the third consecutive month, sparking optimism for a possible market rebound during the second half of the year," said John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO.

Regionally, month-to-month sales increased modestly across all regions: China (3.9%), Europe (2.0%), Asia Pacific/All Other (1.3%), Japan (0.4%) and the Americas (0.1%). Year on year, sales in Europe increased by 5.9%, but fell by 5.5% in Japan, 22.6% in the Americas, 23% in Asia Pacific/All Other, and 29.5% in China.

Taiwan-based GlobalWafers, a silicon wafer company, saw its revenue increase about 2% on year to NT$17.9 billion (US$571.8 million) in the second quarter of 2023. June revenue grew 5.9% sequentially to NT$6.31 billion.

GlobalWafers' cumulative 2023 revenue through June totaled NT$36.5 billion, up 7.9% from the same period a year earlier, despite a 3.9% sequential drop in second-quarter revenue.
