TSMC has been granted a 1-year extension to its exemption from US trade sanctions on China as the company announced that its Nanjing facility, which manufactures 28nm and 16nm chips, will continue its operations.
After the South Korean government announced earlier this week that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have both been granted indefinite waivers, attention has turned towards the Taiwanese firm.
TSMC announced that its Nanjing facility will continue its operations and has applied for an indefinite waiver. The company has been advised by the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) to apply for Validated End-User (VEU) authorization, which would grant permanent authorization for its operations in China. Even though TSMC has not applied for VEU status since it was introduced in 2007, the company expects to receive the indefinite waiver through the VEU process.
