As one of the key pivots in implementing its 3+3 transformation strategy, Foxconn (Hon Hai) Technology Group's Hon Hai Research Institute held a trapped ion quantum computing laboratory opening ceremony on October 15th, establishing Taiwan's first industrial quantum computer development center.
Foxconn stated that this laboratory will contribute high-efficiency computing capabilities required for next-generation AI and automotive-related technologies, laying the foundation for Foxconn's quantum technology deployment.
The trapped ion quantum computing laboratory, which took about two years for Hon Hai Research Institute to establish, will be dedicated to the development of a universal quantum computer based on the ion trap platform. It will also engage in critical technology research, including quantum control, scalable quantum computing architecture, and semiconductor chips that integrate micro-ion traps and photonic circuits.
Director of the laboratory, Guin-Dar Lin, stated that quantum computing is undoubtedly the holy grail of the next generation, but quantum technology is by no means a quick process. It requires repeated trial and error, the accumulation of experience, and a high degree of integration of talents, resources, and technology. This trapped ion laboratory is an important experimental field for Taiwan's industry.
In fact, in 2022, the trapped ion laboratory already collaborated with Foxconn's C Business Group to develop and produce the first-generation single-zone blade-type ion trap core. In 2023, the technology will be further upgraded to introduce a new generation of multi-zone ion traps. Foxconn stated that more related details will be showcased at Foxconn Technology Day on the 18th.
