Amazon announces new tablets

Press release; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES Asia

Amazon has introduced its latest tablet products, the new Fire HDX 8.9, Fire HD, Fire HD Kids Edition and two Kindles.

The new Fire HDX 8.9 combines a light design and a HDX display with a new, more powerful processor, Dolby Atmos and the latest Dolby Audio, and new Fire OS 4 (Sangria) features and services. The new Fire HDX is available for pre-order for US$379.

The new Fire HDX 8.9 is equipped with a 2.5GHz processor with a 70% faster graphics engine and a HDX display with pixel density of 339ppi, 100% sRGB color accuracy and Dynamic Light Control technology.

The new Fire HDX 8.9 supports both Wi-Fi and 4G LTE communication standards.

The new Fire HD features a quad-core processor, front and rear-facing cameras and an HD display. The new Fire HD tablets are available in two sizes - 6-inch for US$99 and 7-inch for US$139 - and five color choices: black, white, cobalt, magenta, and citron.

The Fire HD Kids Edition also comes with two sizes: the 6-inch model is priced at US$149 and the 7-inch model is priced at US$189.

The Fire HD Kids Edition includes a year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited for kids to get unlimited access to 5,000 books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games at no additional cost.

The Fire HD Kids Edition features a quad-core processor, a HD display, front- and rear-facing cameras, Dolby Digital audio, and access to Amazon's content ecosystem of over 33 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, and Android apps and games.

Amazon unveils two new Kindles, the Kindle Voyage and the new US$79 Kindle, with a 20% faster processor, twice the storage, and a touch interface.

The Kindle Voyage uses a new Paperwhite display, with 300pixels per inch. The front display stack uses specially strengthened glass, which is designed to resist scratches. Since regular glass would create glare, the cover glass on Kindle Voyage is micro-etched in order to diffuse light, ensuring users can read easily in bright light without glare.

The Kindle Voyage introduces PagePress, a new way to turn pages. PagePress uses a custom-designed force sensor that sits directly under the bezel. Users can rest their thumb on the bezel and turn the page by lightly pressing.

The Kindle Voyage is available with free 3G and priced at US$199.
