US-based semiconductor solutions provider Qorvo has partnered with electronic design automation software and engineering services supplier Cadence Design Systems to help Vietnam boost the talent training efforts of the local semiconductor industry.
Vietnam Minister of Planning and Investment (MPI) Nguyen Chi Dung said at the collaboration ceremony that they expect to finish training 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030 via the partnership.
IC designers in training
According to Theinvestor.vn and Hanoi Times, a three-month analog IC course was recently held at the National Innovation Center (NIC) in Hanoi. Cadence supported the course by providing IC software licenses, while Qorvo sent IC instructors and experts to share standard curriculum content from the US with the trainees.
Dung noted that this course marks the beginning of the country's IC design program and represents a significant step toward joining the ranks of countries advancing semiconductor technology.
The 40 trainees included lecturers, experts, and top students from nine universities across Vietnam, each receiving a scholarship worth approximately US$1,182.
The global semiconductor value chain is gradually shifting towards Southeast Asian countries,e benefiting Vietnam with its favorable business environment, strategic location, well-developed infrastructure, and skilled young workforce.
The Vietnamese government is keen to accelerate the development of its semiconductor industry and ecosystem. As a result, NIC and Qorvo have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) focused on research, development, and advanced talent cultivation, positioning NIC as the development hub for Vietnam's semiconductor sector.
IC design talent wanted
Marvell, a leading American semiconductor company, recently opened a new office in Da Nang, central Vietnam, with plans to expand operations and create a world-class IC design center. Le Quang Dam, general manager of Marvell's Vietnam subsidiary, announced further expansion plans in Ho Chi Minh City with additional offices dedicated to IC design.
He predicted that Vietnam would soon become Marvell's third-largest IC design center globally, joining the US, India, and Israel as one of Marvell's four major R&D centers.
In 2023, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh formally announced that the country's industrial strategy would prioritize the semiconductor industry. The country aims to train 50,000 to 100,000 high-tech professionals between 2025 and 2030 with 15,000 of them focusing on IC design.
Consequently, Qorvo plans to expand its operations in Vietnam, creating more IC-related job opportunities.
