OpenAI's annualized revenue reached US$10 billion as of June 2025, nearly doubling from US$5.5 billion at the end of 2024, according to reports from CNBC, the Financial Times, and Reuters. The growth is largely driven by ChatGPT subscriptions and API services, excluding licensing deals and major one-time transactions with Microsoft.
Despite the surge, OpenAI remains unprofitable, posting an estimated US$5 billion in losses in 2024. According to The Information, the company is aiming to reach profitability by 2029, with a long-term revenue goal of US$125 billion. OpenAI appears on track to meet its earlier projection of US$12.7 billion in revenue by 2025.
The company has scaled its commercial offerings since launching ChatGPT in late 2022. As of May 2025, OpenAI reported more than 3 million paying business customers. CEO Sam Altman said in April that after adding AI image generation to ChatGPT, weekly active users ranged between 800 million and 1 billion.
OpenAI has also expanded its footprint through acquisitions and strategic partnerships, including the US$500 million purchase of hardware startup io Products and a US$3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, an AI-assisted code-writing tool. It is also working with former US President Donald Trump and SoftBank on the AI data center initiative "Stargate."
