At the WWDC 2025, Apple introduced iOS 26 on June 9, a major update that includes advancements in Apple Intelligence and a comprehensive redesign of user interface elements. This release focuses on enhancing the functionality and experience across Apple's ecosystem, supported by more powerful on-device processing capabilities.
Apple intelligence and privacy
A focal point of iOS 26 is the expanded use of Apple Intelligence, designed to enhance user interaction through advanced features like Genoji and Image Playground. These tools enable users to express themselves creatively and manage digital content more efficiently. Notably, Apple has reinforced the privacy of these features by utilizing on-device processing with private cloud computing, ensuring that users' data remains inaccessible to external parties, including Apple itself.
New language model access for developers
With the introduction of a new foundation models framework, developers are now able to access powerful large language models (LLMs) on-device directly. This allows applications to operate efficiently without needing constant cloud connectivity, reducing dependency on cloud-based APIs and associated costs. This framework aims to facilitate the creation of innovative applications capable of offering intelligent, personalized experiences, such as tailored study aids or activity recommendations during outdoor excursions.
Unified design and user interface
Incorporating a unified design approach, iOS 26 introduces "liquid glass" as a new material for its user interface, aiming to improve clarity and responsiveness across devices. This design harmonizes the experience between different Apple products by integrating visually cohesive elements like adaptive app icons and a dynamic lock screen. The redesigned interface supports new customization options and enhances the intuitive nature of user interactions.
Enhancements to default apps
iOS 26 also brings updates to core apps such as the Phone and Messages apps. The Phone app now features a unified layout that combines calls, messages, and voicemails for streamlined access, complemented by new call-screening capabilities to manage unknown numbers. Meanwhile, the Messages app includes enhanced group chat functionalities, automated polling, and spam detection features to improve communication efficiency.
Visual intelligence integration
Expanding on visual intelligence, iOS 26 allows users to leverage their cameras for real-time exploration and interaction with their environment. This capability enables users to analyze and act on visual input directly through their device, integrating with various apps across the platform. It enhances convenience in finding information and managing digital tasks without needing to switch contexts.
