SAIC is the biggest carmaker in China, with sales of more than 5 million units and the largest number of EVs sold in China 2021 at 730,000 units. SAIC owns passenger car joint ventures such as SAIC Volkswagen, SAIC-GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling, as well as several commercial vehicle joint ventures. Brand names exclusive to SAIC include Maxus, MG, Roewe, and Yuejin. Immotor, established in 2020, is a SAIC brand for new energy vehicle. In terms of EV-related technologies, SAIC has invested in battery technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries and hydrogen fuel cells through its subsidiaries, while its Tier 1 subsidiary, HASCO Automobile, has electric drive, electronic control and vehicle control (Drive by Wire) technologies. SAIC invested in an IGBT startup by the end of 2021 and announced the entry into battery swapping market in 2022.
