The Tata Group is set to expand its influence in the semiconductor sector by signing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with ten semiconductor firms, reports India Today.
This strategic move was announced by Tata Group chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran during the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit held in Guwahati on February 25. In his address, Chandrasekaran commended the presence of global semiconductor ecosystem players such as ASMPT, Disco, Besi, Cadence, and Tokyo Electron, who are already establishing themselves in the region.
Tata Semiconductor recently began constructing an INR270 billion (approx. US$324 million) OSAT facility in Jagiroad, Assam, which is expected to produce up to 48 million chips daily and provide over 30,000 jobs.
Meanwhile, according to the Press Information Bureau of India and the Print, India's Union Minister for Information and Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has complemented this development by confirming that the semiconductor fabrication plants in Assam will begin chip production by 2026.
Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of these developments, noting that they align with plans to enhance infrastructure and industrialization in the region. He highlighted Assam and the Northeast as pivotal to India's developmental progress, referring to the region as the "New Engine" of growth for the country.
During the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, Vaishnaw also announced plans to transform Guwahati Railway Station into a new IT hub and acknowledged the completion of 1,824 km of new railway tracks in Assam and the Northeast since 2014. Additional infrastructure projects include the inauguration of two Gati Shakti cargo terminals and the development of six more in various locations across the state.
Furthermore, advancements in railway connectivity were announced, including the operational status of a Vande Bharat Express and the upcoming launch of additional train services and facilities.
Chandrasekaran applauded the Assam government's efforts to create a conducive environment for industrial growth and their governance, transparency, and responsiveness to industry needs. He noted that the collaborative approach between the Assam government and the Tata Group has propelled the projects' progress significantly. The summit underscored the potential for Assam to become a leading hub in the semiconductor and electronics manufacturing sectors, supported by substantial infrastructure initiatives and strategic industrial collaborations.
